United Way Presents Spirit Award to Amarr

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The United Way of North Carolina recently presented its 2008 Spirit of North Carolina awards to 25 companies or organizations across the state, including Amarr Garage Doors in Winston-Salem.  Amarr is one of the world’s leading designers, manufacturers and distributors of garage doors and door access systems for residential garages and commercial applications.

The Spirit Awards provide statewide recognition for outstanding commitment and support to communities through United Way involvement at the local level.  The Spirit Awards were developed to recognize companies and their employees that demonstrate United Way campaign excellence, a high level of enthusiasm and long-lasting community commitment.

Amarr employees gave more than $170,000 to United Way last year, reflecting an eight percent per capita giving increase over 2006.  The company has four locations in the Winston-Salem area, including its support center (corporate offices), Piedmont Garage Doors, Kernersville door center (distribution center) and North Carolina manufacturing plant in Davie County.

“All of us at Amarr are honored to be recognized by the United Way and to be included among a wonderful group of other people and businesses from North Carolina who contributed to United Way last year,” Richard Brenner, Chief Executive Officer of Amarr, said.  “Our company has a long history of supporting United Way, and this recognition serves as a reminder for us to try harder every year to be generous with our support.  We are glad to do our part to help.”

The United Way of North Carolina presented the Spirit Awards at its annual meeting in Pinehurst on February 8.  Joining Amarr were six other Spirit Award winners from Winston-Salem:  R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, PLLC; B/E Aerospace, Wake Forest University, Leonard Ryden Burr Real Estate and BB&T.

Organizations and companies were judged on a variety of criteria including leadership giving, overall volunteerism, employee participation and giving levels, year-round education, corporate support, incentive programs and campaign rallies.
